Eliminate hot and cool spots in your home
An energy efficient home will automatically eliminate hot and
cool spots in your home, which can be quite uncomfortable during the
extreme seasons such as winter and summer. Be sure to check out The
Top Ten Ways to Save On Your Energy Costs. Here are some other tips
to help with some of these problem areas.
1. Switch to "Fan on" at
the thermostat. Hot and cool spots are usually a sign of poor circulation
through the ducts at some areas. This can be caused by improperly
designed ductwork, an oversized heating and/or cooling system, or
a poor location for the thermostat. By running the fan all the time
at the thermostat, air is allowed to circulate while the system is
not heating or cooling. Dont overlook something as simple as a dirty
filter or a furnace that needs cleaning. Have RepairMax check your
system Regularly.
2. Have a RepairMax technician adjust for proper
airflow at your furnace. It could be possible to increase the fan
speed at the blower motor. Dont attemp this yourself as there are
usually other adjustments that become required such as the level of
freon and/or damper adjustment.
3. Make sure that ducts are properly
sealed.Ducts carry air from the central air conditioner or heater
to the rest of the house. If they are leaky, then up to 20% of the
air (and money) is being used to heat or cool the attic, unfinished
basement, or outdoors. By properly insulating and air sealing the
ducts, or installing them in conditioned space, you can eliminate
most or all of this unnecessary loss, and save up to 20% on your heating
and cooling bill.
